Compress an image for your file-size limit
Set the maximum your destination accepts, select a suitable format, and review the finished file. A missed target is reported so you can decide what to change. Your files never leave your device.

What this page helps you do
Prepare a photo for an upload with a maximum file size, using a KB target instead of guessing an encoder quality setting. Each output reports the size actually reached, including when the requested cap could not be met.
How to use the result
Choose an accepted format and enter the cap. JPEG/WebP quality search and PNG palette reduction can be followed by downscaling. A file that already fits can be returned unchanged when Auto or its existing format is selected.
Before you rely on it
- Check both the downloaded byte size and the pixel dimensions against the receiving form.
- Inspect small text, signature strokes and facial details at the intended viewing size.
Limit to keep in mind: A smaller file can lose detail. Compression alone does not establish photo acceptance, and an unchanged original retains its original metadata.
Read the whole upload requirement
A KB limit describes file size, not the shape or resolution of the picture. Check the accepted formats, any minimum size and the required pixel dimensions before choosing a target. Use the form photo checker when those rules need to be checked together.
YoursToUse counts 1 KB as 1024 bytes. A destination using 1000 bytes per KB can reject a file very close to its cap. Compare the actual byte size when the two systems disagree.
Review detail as well as the number
JPEG and WebP results can lose fine detail as quality is reduced, and the search may reduce dimensions. Inspect small writing, signature joins and facial detail at the size where the recipient will use the image.
PNG output is losslessly encoded after processing, but palette or dimension reduction can still change the source. A successful size check does not establish that a face or line of text remains usable.
Choose the format deliberately
Auto considers JPEG and WebP and keeps a format that can hold transparency where applicable. Select JPEG when the receiving service specifically requires JPG. Renaming the extension does not convert a file.
With Auto or the format selected, an original that already meets the cap can be returned unchanged. This avoids another encode and also retains the original metadata.

Frequently asked questions
- Does it create an exact number of bytes?
- The target is a maximum to work toward. Encoders do not produce every possible byte size, so the tool reports the result it reached rather than padding a file to fill the cap.
- What happens if the target cannot be reached?
- The result identifies the missed target. Try a higher permitted cap, a more suitable source or a permitted crop. Required dimensions and readable detail still matter.
- Can I compress several images together?
- Yes. Apply one target to several images and download successful results as a ZIP. Check each result because one source may fit while another fails.
- Does compression remove location information?
- Re-encoding does not copy source EXIF/GPS blocks. An original returned unchanged keeps them. Use the metadata remover for a deliberate inspection and removal step.
- Are image contents sent to a server?
- The compression work runs in your browser. Application files need to load, but the selected photo contents are not uploaded for processing.
